Gauge the effectiveness of your Intranet
Get feedback from the people using your Internal Web sites on a daily
basis. Take it into account and make changes to your Intranet Web
Presence! Speed up CGI scripts and database accessing. Add new on-line
information. Restructure.
How?
Consider any or all of the following methods to solicit feedback:
- Include an E-Mailing address on every page of your Intranet Web
Presence. When a thought or comment strikes, a visitor should not
need to go looking through the Intranet Web site for a way to contact
you.
- Try to include a survey form strategically in the Web site.
Gather information discretely and politely about the usefulness of the
information presented. If no one needs the information, remove it from
the Intranet!
- Monitor internal network traffic, Intranet Web Server access logs
and Intranet Web site hit statistics. Unlike the World Wide Web,
every hit does count in terms of estimating and eliminating bottlenecks
in your Intranet's performance! Every in-line image or datum on a Web
page that's automatically fetched by a Web Browser counts as a hit on
that page. The simple act of reading a single Web Page with 10 in-line
images can generate a Web Page hit count of 11 for a single viewer! If
that page is needed by everyone in the department or in the business on
a very frequent basis, the volume of network traffic generated may prove
unacceptable. It may be time to redesign the page, cut it into smaller
pieces, redistribute it across other Intranet Web Servers, change CGI
scripts, or switch to caching Intranet Web Servers.
